When we were on Spring vacation in Anacortes, Washington, we had a chance to walk through Lovrić’s Sea Craft, a large boatyard on Oakes Avenue. Follow the link to the website for the facility, it has some great before and after pictures of their work on boats of all kinds.
Lovrić (the correct name, according to the website, is without the “‘s” but with the acute accent on the “c”) is on the north west side of Fidalgo Island, along Guemes Channel. This is a view from the boat yard toward the island.
Lovrić has been around since 1965. There are many old buildings, old equipment, old vehicles, and old boats. This is the back of one building. The sand hopper on the right is for sale. I really like this image.
Before we walked down the hill to Lovrić, I had noted that there was a large green barge being moved about at the end of the pier. When we went down, we met the crew working on it and learned that it was a 440′ barge being refinished. They were cleaning the sides with acetone as the original paint job had gone bad due to being applied when the humidity was too high. In a town where in the winter the humidity is normally 100%, I did not understand the problem. The fist picture is a high dynamic range (HDR) image that combines two images.
Nonetheless, one could see the difference between the old and the new finish. One needs a nice shiny finish on one’s barge.
The tail fins on the stern of the barge were colorful, and the ebbing tide made the water swirl.
By the barge was an old generator.
The floating dry dock was pretty cool. It sinks underneath a boat, and raises it up so that it can be worked on.
Lovrić is full of boats. Working boats.
Old boats
Newer boats.
There is abandoned equipment and material everywhere. They could make a fortune in scrap; I’d hate to see the bill for a toxic waste cleanup.
Up on blocks, this wooden hull was clearly a rebuild from scratch operation. It is not clear if work is under way.
